Giorgia Lo Faso creates spaces where fragments speak, tensions rise, and processes slowly unfold. As a teenager discovering her family home had been sold without her knowledge, and losing the memory card from the camera she had used to take the last photographs of the house, her practice became a long journey to mourn this loss.
In her work she traces the threshold of a home on the verge of vanishing and the residues of life that accumulate in the cracks of a building.
By adapting the use of strappo, a traditional restoration technique to detach frescos from walls, Lo Faso lifts and peels off the surface layers of houses soon to be demolished. These dislocated remnants evoke the memories that burrow in a space over time, the politics of housing demolition, and the normalization of displacing low-income residents.
Recently she has opened herself to vulnerable encounters with strangers in their temporary dwellings. Intruding from within the most intimate of spaces, she seeks to look together at displacement, loss, and the death of a house. What is the afterlife of a home once it vanishes? Of its inhabitants, its voices, its surfaces, its dust?
